Hidden Discoveries Mathematics Olympiad
This Contest Is No Longer Held (12/31/2009).
In the summer of year 2008, I realized that I wanted to do math more than just a hobby. Through various points in my high school, I have attempted to make exams that simulated the real AMC (American Mathematics Competition) or the AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination) by MAA (Mathematical Association of America). It was definitely a worthwhile experience to think like the test-maker instead of the test-taker.
But during that summer, I hoped to do more than simply build mock exams. Mock exams are entertaining, but they are not like the real contests. I remember that when I participated in the mock exam, I felt like I was doing a mock exam, not the real AMC or the AIME. I also thought that with all the efforts I put in, it would be better to make it an official contest and add more problems to it. So there came... Hidden Discoveries Math Olympiad.
Initially, the contest was supposed to include all three levels of math competitions by MAA, referring to the last round - USAMO. Unfortunately, solving USAMO problem is incredibly difficult, and obviously, writing it is even more difficult. As a result, I decided to cross out that part out and just include the AMC and the AIME.
To make the contest more official, I have requested detailed private information from the contestants. At first, I was met with usual complaints as, "Why aren't you just hosting the exam in Art of Problem Solving" or "These information are not for colleges... Why bother?" The reason was simple: statistics. I wanted to make this exam to be realistic as possible so for the first round, I compiled the detailed statistics using Excel (incorporated into Word, which was converted to PDF file). It was important to me that the students felt like they were in the real contest... because they were!
There will be many documents in this page, all referring to this contest and other related math topics. They will all be written by myself, and you are more than welcome to use them provided that I am the copyright holder, and you will not modify it on any reason.
